Kitten Vaccinations

Core Vaccines

Your kitten should have its first set of core vaccinations when it is about six to eight weeks old. The core vaccinations are the most important vaccines that all cats should have. The first vaccinations will include shots for feline rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, and panleukopenia. When they are twelve weeks old, kittens should also receive vaccinations for feline leukemia and rabies. These first vaccinations must be repeated several times during your kitten's first year. Our veterinarian will let you know the necessary schedule for repeat vaccinations and will ensure your kitten is fully vaccinated on time.

Non-Core Vaccines

The vet may also recommend additional vaccinations for your kitten if there are risk factors, like several other cats living in your home. Vaccinations for bordetella bronchiseptica ("Kennel Cough") or chlamydia felis are recommended for kittens depending on these risk factors. The “non-core” vaccines but are still important to get if your vet determines your kitten is at risk for any of the diseases.

Why Vaccines Matter

The immune system of kittens is still developing and vaccines provide critical support against deadly diseases. The vaccines prevent your kitten from getting seriously ill by training the immune system early on how to react and defend against these diseases. In the end the greatest form of preventative care your kitten can have is vaccination.
